US Visa Photo from India: Size, Crop, and Upload Checks

A practical guide for preparing a US visa photo from India, including 2x2 size, white background, digital upload, and common rejection risks.

Many applicants in India prepare a US visa photo at home or at a local studio, then discover that the file is not the right crop or upload shape. The US format is square, and that matters.

Start with the US 2 x 2 inch requirement

The US passport and many US visa photo workflows use a 2 x 2 inch photo. In digital preparation, that means a square file. Do not start with an India passport-style 35 x 45 mm crop and assume it will convert cleanly.

Use a wider source image with shoulders and space above the head. A tightly cropped portrait often cannot become a safe square file.

Use a white or off-white background

The background should be plain white or off-white. A cream wall, grey wall, or shadowed wall can create problems. If the wall has texture, retake the photo.

Background replacement may look convenient, but it can leave halos around hair or ears. If the official route warns against altered images, use a fresh source photo instead.

Check upload quality

Screenshots and compressed messaging-app images are risky. Use the original camera file where possible. Avoid photos older than the official route allows, and avoid filters.

When a studio is better

Use a studio if you cannot get even light, if your home background is not plain, or if glasses glare keeps appearing. A good studio photo can still be checked online for crop and file shape before upload.

Start with the 2x2 inch photo maker and open the US passport photo page for the current checklist.
